Our Schedule for 2012

At our second meeting for the new year, we had a very productive day and planned a wonderful quilting calendar. On the column to the right, please click on the schedule for 2012 at the top. There you will find highlighted dates of our travels and classes. There are no dues to attend.

We are a fun and friendly group of quilters that meet on Tuesday and Friday at Northeast Christian Church, in Louisville, Ky. We have everything you need to make a quilt, including sewing machines, irons, rulers and cutting mats.

Please bring your own projects to work on. From time to time we go on field trips, or learn new things, but, if not highlighted on our schedule, we have Sit N Sew meetings from 10 to 1:00 in room 201 on Tuesday and 202 on Friday.

The Christmas Party was a whole lot of fun!!

We had a jam packed day of fun at our annual Christmas party. First we exchanged our 6 inch squares of fabric for our friendship quilt. Our members traded fabric and the quilt we make will hopefully be shown at our annual Christmas in July party.

We have outgrown our room and have started a second group on Friday from 10:00 to ?? The ladies from our second group turned out to be the lucky ones and won all the door prizes.

Our Show and Tell was fabulous, with the newly formed, Sit, Stitch and Sew group in attendance. Some of us had our french braid quilts from the retreat. We also collected underwear and wash cloths for Sister Visitor. We also had a lot of fun exchanging squares for a quilt we will make and show at the Christmas in July party.

We had enough suggestions to last for 3 years. But, from this long list, majority rules as we selected some pretty interesting things to do. Once again our group proves what an active and vibrant group we are. This second half of the year's calendar is very well paced, this quilter thinks, with a good balance of field trips and learning opportunities.

The focus of our group is now and has always been finishing what we have started. That is why the majority of our time is spent in our regular meetings, which are Sit 'N Sew. This generally means you bring in our own project and work on it. We have a wealth of information in the club that people are willing to share. So if you are stumped, bring your problem in and we will try to help you figure it out. Even basic quilting/sewing information can be answered in this group.

Calender for August to December 2011

August 6: Ruth Scrappy Friendship Quilt It was a unanimous decision: you cut 64 light and 64 dark 6 inch squares and bring them to the Christmas Party in December to exchange. Wash fabrics before you cut them.

August 23: Julie Kentucky State Fair. We will meet at the Northsprings Counseling Center parking lot at 9:00 for our trip on Senior Day at the fair. The cost is $1.00 per person.

September 6: Twister quilt class will be a 2 part class-Loyce will talk about fabric selections. Also, Pat will talk about fabric selections for the Fabric Bowls class.

September 9: (Friday) Speed Art Museum trip. Leave at 10:00

September 20: Julie will give a class on label making. Bring your quilts for the delivery to the Heartland of Kentucky Quilt Show. If you have any quilts you would like to make a label for, bring that quilt to participate in this class.

September 22: Thursday, Julie will bring the quilts to the HKQS in Elizabethtown.

September 23 and 24; Friday and Saturday: We plan to attend the quilt show as a group, leaving the church parking lot at 2:00 on Saturday, September 24th.

October 4: Loyce will be teaching the Twister class. Bring your machines.

October 11: Julie Carnegie Center, New Albany, In to see Penny Sisto’s native American art quilts.

October 18: Pat and Julie will organize the trip to Science Hill and The Cotton Blossom in Shelbyville.

November 1: Pat will show us how to make the fabric bowls.

December 6: Carol and Cece will organize our party. Linda and Toni will organize our “good works” opportunity. Ruth will organize the Scrappy Friendship Quilt square exchange.

All meetings are on Tuesdays and Fridays. They are Sit n Sew (work on your projects) in our room at Northeast Christian Church, 9900 Old Brownsboro Road Louisville, Ky 40241 (across from the Walgreens on Chamberlain) from 10:00 to 1:00 in room 201 at the church. Hello Quilters!

We really are blessed with many opportunities for sharing our quilting skills. Whether it's to enter a show or to learn a new pattern, we are not letting any moss grow under our feet this first half of 2010. You don't have to participate in anything you don't want to. All our activities are optional, including the quilt show.

Our schedule is as follows until the end of July:

1. Your dish you signed up to bring for the party.
2. Two quilts for the Elizabethtown Quilt show, September 23 and 24. I will take a picture and print it out to attach to the form for insurance purposes, and mail them in.
Or if you would like to enter a wearable art piece that would be great.
3. Two forms for the quilts you would like to enter-filled out
4. Ten Dollars total, for the 2 quilts to enter in the show to cover insurance.
5. Your log cabin quilt. The block was chosen at the Christmas party last year now it's time for the "unveiling".

The best laid plans can sometimes go wrong and it's nobody's fault. All 18 showed up for the first day of our retreat and there was no power. We canceled it and have moved it to June 13 and 14th.

Besides the French Braid pattern, you might like to learn techniques for one or all 3 of these quilts.

Hello Quilters!

Our quilt group is blessed with some pretty terrific quilters. One of our most gifted quilters, Mary Ernwine, is choosing to share her talents with us, free of charger, for the retreat on May 24 and 25 at the Pieceful Haven retreat facility in Lagrange, Ky. Mary has been in the group from the beginning, back in 2000. Over the years I have seen her make some wonderful quilts. Her gift of color selection and usage in a quilt are amazing. She has put together some of the most stunning quilts I have ever seen in my 25 plus years in the quilt world. She has won many ribbons at the state fair. You do not want to miss an opportunity to learn from her. She is a wonderful teacher!

This Tuesday, May 17, Mary Ernwine will be helping everyone organize and cut their fabrics for the French Braid quilt. She will be teaching the construction of the quilt at the retreat at Pieceful Haven.

Please bring your fabrics on Tuesday, washed or not, your choice to do so or not. Mary did not wash hers, nor did I. Also, bring a cutting wheel and if you have one, an 8 1/2 inch by 24 inch ruler. If you don't have one, we have rulers in the cabinet that will work with some thoughtful use.

Marie will also be there with the sign up sheet for the food.

Working on the French Braid quilt is not a requirement for the retreat. If you choose to get caught up on your UFO's or if you want to do the Friendship Braid quilt pattern, that is a scrap pattern that I showed a while ago, that would be great!

I suspect there may be a scrabble game, maybe a card game or we can play anything else you think might be fun. We all love our quilting, but it's nice to take a break and laugh and share together around a good old fashioned board game or whatever.

It's going to be a lot of fun!

Also, I will be in Oklahoma for a wedding next weekend, so there will be no quilting on Friday, May 20.

No quilting in the room on Tuesday, May 24, as we will all be on retreat!

These are pictures from the Friday class that meets in room 202 at Northeast Christian Church. We used to meet in the LL, but, there have been some issues with the room, so we are now meeting right next door to our Tuesday group meeting. There is a good works group that makes fleece blankets for the hospitals that started meeting in our old room on Fridays, so we move next door for Friday only.

Trip to Whittles

We took a road trip to Whittles Fabric Store in Smith's Grove, Kentucky, by way of the Porky Pig restaurant. As usual we did the Northeast Quilting Friends scenic route, but, made it to our destinations. It's always nice to see the back roads and byways of Kentucky.

Even though the store was somewhat understaffed, we were able to come home with an ample amount of material.

Whew! QDO is over. It's a one day event that shows off the Guilds in the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society's District 6. Most all were in attendance and showed some of their class projects and did demonstrations.

Our group showed our retreat class and a table topper class.

Loyce and Sheila won a door prize.

Shirley showed the basket lady how to make a basket-she is a master basket weaver herself. That was a class we did as well.

We had 3 ladies participate in the Viewer's Choice Quilt Challenge, no one one, but, it inspires us to finish something with a deadline to complete.

Getting Ready for Quilters' Day Out!

I think our log cabin heart shaped block class went well. I hope you all learned something from our sharing of tips at the beginning of the day. I know I sure did!

Just a reminder, if you would like to continue working on your log cabin heart quilt, you are welcome to attend the Friday session of Northeast Quilting Friends. We will meet in the lower level from 10:00 to 1:00.

Also, we've collected our money for the door prize basket to be given away at Quilters' Day Out and will fill it Tuesday.

Next Tuesday, March 8th, we will be having our QDO planning session. This is where we will decide how we will decorate and "woman the booth" off and on during the 10:00 to 4:00 day.

This year you can shop all day, the vendors won't close down for the 3 speakers. The speakers will be located immediately to to left, in the Julia Belle room, closed off from the main room-it can hold around 500 people.

Besides the shopping, and looking at all the guild displays and demos, you can learn some new tips and techniques from the speakers and also vote on the quilt challenge-I believe our quilt group will have 3 entries. In that room, you can see the organ donor quilt club and see the award winning Happy Heart quilts-Aliens from Planet Quilt.

For your $3.00 and a donation (money or groceries) to Mom's Closet, you will get another jammed packed day of quilting fun!!

Announcing a Second Group is Forming at Northeast Christian Church

God has blessed us with a very nice group of women who like quilting and visiting and caring about each other. It really is great to see the group grow and our meeting room is almost at capacity. I appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm inviting people to attend our group and I firmly believe we should never turn anyone away who would like to join our group.

In keeping with this philosophy of never turning anyone away, we will be starting a second quilt guild at Northeast Christian Church. The current group will continue to meet on Tuesday in the same room as now, 10:00 to 1:00 and the new startup group will meet on Friday in the lower level room, 10:00 to 1:00. I plan to lead both groups and you may attend either or both sessions! Also, please tell others of this opportunity so that we may have two large, active quilting groups!

This expansion was sure to come and now it is here. It is my hope and prayer that we can grow in grace and caring for our new members as well as keeping our long time members happily quilting together. This is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and continue to learn new things.

The holidays are over and we get to go back to our routine. The new church is being built right beside us and the progress is moving right along.

We had a fun day of catching up and planning our UFO's. We have 5 birthdays in the month of January so Marie made a crazy quilt birthday quilt for us.

Some of our members have been very busy bees over the month or so we've been apart and it was nice of them to bring their projects to inspire the rest of us.

Next week we are planning our 6 months schedule so bring any and all ideas for our brainstorming session.

At our annual Christmas party we got to see almost everyone in our group come together to visit, play games and of course see some quilts. Our group has been together for 11 years now and we've grown to about 20 people. From week to week around 15 come, which is fine, but, for the parties almost everyone is in attendance.

Over the years all of us have amassed a quantity of finished quilts, but, you know, we wouldn't be quilters if our eyes weren't bigger than our time available to finish all those projects we've started. You know what I mean, UFO's, WISPS, or whatever other acronym that may be appropriate.

Anyway, I've come up with a possible way of reminding ourselves at least weekly, just what we've started. I made new name tags for the group and on the back it says "I will try to finish in 2011: January 11th: my Round Robin Quilt is 1/2 finished. Then there is a space for the date of completion-quilted and all. This goes for April and August as well.

Now, I've always wanted our group to be an easy group to be in. Our main purpose in the beginning was to help with ideas and inspiration and assistance in finishing projects we've already started. I've attended some groups that are pretty forceful with things, but, it works for them. This group is not meant to stress anyone out. So, the word "try" is there. They even have 4 months to finish something. I hope I'm not asking too much. But, I understand life gets in the way of our quilting.

If the ladies can finish the 3 quilts starting in the months before our Christmas party in 2011, at the party I plan to have a prize of some sort for a reward...hmmm... I hope this is going to be fun.

All those coming to the meeting Tuesday, January 11th should bring in their first UFO of the year that they will try to finish by the end of the year.

It's something new, quilters are pretty good at trying new things. If you are looking for a group to join, here we are! Bring a UFO, January 11th at 10:00 to Northeast Christian Church. We have a sit n sew or class from 10 to 1:00 then usually go out to eat lunch afterward. The ladies are beginners to blue ribbon winners, so you will fit right in! I will make a name tag for you to help you finish those unfinished projects you might have around.

Productivity is Us!

Our last few classes that were taught have yielded many future gifts for families. The Snappy Tote, taught by Julie, was a huge success and Pat and Martha brought more in to show.

The group is at it's best when people are inspired by other's work. I was inspired by Loyce's gift to her friend that had a water theme, so I made this Tennessee Waltz quilt for my friend that bought a lake house.

Loyce was inspired by Shirley who recently turned out a few cheater quilts. A cheater quilt is a printed fabric that looks like a pieced quilt and she made this autumn themed quilt.

Ruth and Natasha made this quilt for a woman that had a request for our group. Her mother had made clothes and things for them when they were young and wanted them put together for her mom for Christmas.

Besides the friendships and support you get in a guild, the inspiration goes a long way to continuing your interest in quilting. Always be on the look out for it, either as a challenge to your skill or as a way of getting ideas to finish things.

Snappy Tote Class was a huge success!

Our group's roster has about 20 people on it and from week to week there are 10 to 15 regulars for our sit n sews and classes. We have a great schedule that makes opportunities for our members to learn new things.

The class we taught yesterday was how to make the Snappy Tote. It's called the Snappy Tote because it uses the metal from a carpenter's tape measure to create the "snap" for closure. It's a very easy class in which you learn how to machine quilt a small project, as well as a few other techniques for basic bag making.

Our group is filled with over achievers and Betty was certainly the outstanding over achiever Tuesday. I am always emphasizing to the group that a pattern is just a guideline and jumping off of it is highly encouraged for creative development. Betty jumped off in leaps and bounds and came up with a purse with grosgrain and key chain hooks, as well as a matching Kleenex holder. Cool!

All the ladies that started the project in class finished it.

These are just some of the Table Toppers that we made in the class and after the class. Our group of over achievers are at it again, Dot made 5!!

Shirley is truly one of the greatest quilters in our group and she's done a blue thread, hand quilted whole cloth quilt.

She's also such a great quilter because she knows the value of labels for the legacy she is leaving her family.

So what does a successful class make? Is it a finished product? Probably 60 percent of the total is the finished product, whether it's at home later, or in the class. Or like our many over achievers in the room WE FINISH THE PROJECT BEFORE THE CLASS STARTS!. That's exactly what happened this time.

Loyce, one of our newer members gave such good information, before the actual class, that many had finished their table topper before the class began.

All our classes are choose to make a quilt or not. There is no arm twisting in the group. But, this was certainly a popular class and most all participated.

Besides the class, Pat and Ginger showed a fabric dying class they participated in over the weekend. They made beautiful tie dyed and suede like hand dyed fabric.

Another Day Trip for the Quilt Group

Once again we were on the road. This time with 11 in attendance. We went to Blackstone's Home Decor to see a Fleur di lis quilt show and shop. We ate at the Puerto Vallarta restaurant next door, then on to Happy Heart Quilt shop.

Women's Ministry Kick Off Event

We meet at a church that generously provides many things for our group. There is a large well lit room with many tables and chairs. We also have our own cabinet that stores sewing machines and irons and ironing boards. Basically, we have everything you need to make a quilt that is generally taken care of by the church where we meet.

Ten years ago I came to our new Women's Ministry Leader, Laura Wingfield and told her we needed a quilt group at the church. Her response was okay Julie you are it. And thus began our group that has grown to become a support group for women all centered around a time honored craft that we love and want to learn more about.

We have about 20 members, beginning quilters to blue ribbon winners. There are no dues or fees to be paid for classes and the ladies seem to understand that and are happy to pitch in wherever their talents are. Some like to organize trips and some like to teach classes. The Lord has blessed this group in so many ways that I can't begin to count them all.

We are always happy to have new people join us, so if you are looking for a place to learn about quilting and want to belong to a quilt group and get some good inspiration as well as information about quilting, come visit us and see if we fit your personality. You don't have to be a member of the church to join us.

The pictures above are of the Women's Ministry 3-G Event, where we learned about consignment shopping and had a style show and ate some pretty great crock pot lasagna. The Ministries were on display, which Northeast Quilting Friends are a part of. The new booklet was also out, highlighting our bible study classes that can help you really figure things out about the bible.

Thank you hard working girls at the church who so graciously and generously gave their time to organize, decorate and make this a wonderful event.

It goes without saying that we laughed and laughed and laughed...smile.

Besides making lovely quilts, Marie is a member that really likes to help. She's made our name tags and even planned our retreat to Pieceful Haven this year. She also taught a class. This is a pin cushion caddy that was a huge hit with the club. Her sense of humor is also worth mentioning. Above she is hold a quilt for the Ohio Star Challenge that she made with invisible thread and invisible material.

Sheilah is a member that wasn't able to make the party, but, she had made her quilts a while ago. One is for her daughter who has a cat she adores and one is for her sister. What would quilters be without cats? We love our cats!

Carol has been busy taking the "Christmas" part of the party theme seriously. She made 2 quilts with a Christmas theme. I think one of the stars might become a class later on. She also finished a horse quilt without attending our retreat, as she was neck deep in wedding plans and family issues. Her One Block Wonder quilt is gorgeous.

Doris is one of our newer members in our guild. She is skilled in using her embroidery machine. This is her Ohio Star quilt in which she incorporated the block along with the Little Red Wagon she had as a child. The photos on fabric are of her has a little girl with her wagon and her standing by it today.

Besides seeing old friends and having a party, this event for us is a wonderful way to show case the quilters in our group. Our theme for this year's Christmas in July 2010 was the Ohio Star. You were to use it as little or as often in any size or shape in your quilt. Also you were to bring in the quilts you have made since Joan has left the group, last fall.

We were able to move to our church balcony to have the Show and Tell of the quilts. The first one of our group to show case her work was Shirley, probably the most prolific in the club. She mainly enjoys making beautiful traditional quilts, but has been known to stretch herself and try something a bit more contemporary.

This party was extra special because we were able to catch up with some friends we hadn't seen in a long time.

First, our long lost friend from Florida, Joan was in town, and got to be a part of our Show and Tell. Being a wonderful quilter she showed us some quilts she made while she was gone.

We had our usual, Mrs. Murphy's Salad for our meal and then there was some fabulous deserts to share.

2010 Christmas in July Party is extended to August

The Ohio Star quilt pattern will be the theme of the Christmas in July party, 2010. Every year, around the first of the year, we challenge each other to make a quilt from a chosen pattern. All members make some kind of quilt to be shown at our annual party, normally held in July.

This year will be an exception as one of our members, Joan, who has moved to Florida, will be traveling through Louisville on August 10th. So we've decided to make that day our party and share our Ohio Star quilts with her and we also decided to make a show and tell of any of the quilts we have made since she's been gone.

Tuesday, August 10th, we will be meeting in the lower level at church for the party. Mrs Murphy's Salad will be what is served and here is the list of items to bring:

Besides that we like to finish what we have started and so we always have a sit n sew, where you bring in anything you are working on, quilting, embroidery, knitting or needlepoint, besides people all types of needle crafts are welcome.

This last month Mary taught us how to make the Paris Bag pattern.

We also had a few people that got their quilts back from the favorite quilter so this is a show and tell for quilts as well.

Gallopalooza Party was a huge success!

Our last meeting was a celebration, of sorts. We celebrated finishing our quilts and also were able to honor the hard working maintenance crew at the church where we meet.

First we had our own show and tell and everyone brought their quilts, in whatever stage of completion they were in for all to see. These quilts were all made using a pattern called "Race the Wind", which was taught at our retreat. Just about every member of the group made one.

We also had games and prizes, because you know that quilters are really a bunch of kids having a good time.

Next we had a great lunch, using Mrs. Murphy's Salad recipe. It's a really great recipe for a group of people, we had around 25 attend. Ten people bring one item for the salad, which is an "everything but the kitchen sink" kind of taco salad.

Our lunch included our wonderful church staff that ate with us and had a bit of the fun and games. At the end we gave our most deserving receptionist, Beverly, a quilt and an orchid. She's greets people with a smile and "Hey girl!" sometimes, when we see her and so we made the cake in her honor. Our church is blessed with some pretty terrific people that work there.

We are working on our quilts with a date set for our Gallapalooza party, where we will roll out all the 12 quilts in their various stages of completion.

Here in Louisville, Kentucky, where we host the Super Bowl of Horse Racing every year on the first Saturday in May, there is a fund raiser called the Gallapalooza. Life size horses are painted and auctioned off to raise money for different causes.

Our group has so many horse quilts in the cue for completion that we've decided to have our own Gallapalooza party. Here we will display most of our quilts and have a party for the unveiling.

Besides our horses, some of the ladies are finishing up quilts that belong to granddaughters and our world traveler, Shirley, is working on the Serengeti quilt after being inspired by her recent trip there.

We are still working out the date, as people are traveling and we want everyone to attend that would like to be there, but, it's sometime in May.

A Dozen horse quilts were made at the retreat!

We had our retreat at Pieceful Haven. There were 4 that spent the night, but the rest, 8, made a long day of it. We had wonderful meals prepared and ate very well, as quilters are known to do. Maybe that's why cookbooks are such a successful fund raising option.

Shirley made a quilt with the horses on a darker background which gave her horse(s) an etherial look, running out of the mist sort of.

My daughter had a special request to use retro fabrics.

Most of the ladies used the batiks. One of our new members said she didn't know if she was a quilter. I said, if you finish this then you are a quilter. This pattern gives you a great opportunity for learning multiple things for quilting, on a smaller scale.

First and for most, to me is learning to use a design wall. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to stand back and get a perspective on your piece. At Pieceful Haven, the ladies had that opportunity, because design walls were all over it. It's one thing to be looking down and start cutting and placing your fabrics for the horse, it's another to stand back, at least 10 feet for working with your design. This is true for bed quilts as well as wall hangings.

The other thing that made this retreat such as huge success was the willingness of all to share their efforts, whether it was in the fabrics we put up on the tables for all to use, or the time and effort it took to cook or clean the dishes. As we all know, these retreats don't happen by magic and I thank all who helped make this such a great time of quilting with friends and finishing, or almost finishing our quilts is a super by product.

Retreat Time Again!

Well, we are off to our second retreat for the group. The first was many years ago at the White Oak Cabins in Indiana. Back then, there were no "quilt specific" retreat facilities available. This time around we will be going to Pieceful Haven in Crestwood, Kentucky.

The horse quilt pattern, Race the Wind will be taught and the rest of the time the ladies will be working on their own projects over the next 2 days and nights. There are 12 in attendance for this retreat.

Anyone remember where that saying came from? Rowdy, Gil Favor? Ring a bell? Well we'll be getting our Rawhide on at our retreat as we finish our horses. This is a class that will be taught there. This last Tuesday we had a practice exercise, using Steam a Seam Lite 2 and an applique pressing sheet, which you can also use parchment paper.

The beauty of these products and having a great retreat facility like Pieceful Haven, is using one of the many design walls on the premises, you can cut, iron and stand back and examine. Examine what you might ask? Well, you can examine your horses and see if you like how it's coming together. You can peel off the fabric and it sticks again on the fabric. Then, you can peel it off again and you can move it and it sticks.

So, come to our retreat if you like or check out the pattern Race with the Wind for making the horses yourself. What I always say is patterns are guidelines and we can make them our own style or use the techniques we like. Because quilting is such a long term activity, that you better figure out what you enjoy in the craft and that will help you make it faster and more fun.

Quilters' Day Out 2010

Another day of quilting shared with quilters and the public who are curious and possibly experienced quilters who wonder what this guild thing is all about.

Little do they know how nice it is to share our love of a time honored craft with friends. Along with that sharing of quilts comes a sharing of life where the true greatness of the quilt guilds really comes into play.

We had our booth at QDO 2010 and we showed how to make labels for quilts. Both on the computer and using archival quality pens for writing on fabric.

Making a baby quilt for a newborn is by far the most popular gift from a quilter. You would also see funeral quilts, but, no so much today. We all have been working hard on our Ohio Star quilts for the Christmas in July party. In years past it has been a double secret project but, this year for some reason we chose to show our quilts a little early to help others with ideas. One of the best things about a blog is it serves as a catch up for those that couldn't make it that day. So for those that could't make it today her is your Ohio Star inspiration. I'm jealous because so many people are almost finished with theirs or are finished.

Pat's only been in the group a short while but she's already making her own patterns like this blue Ohio star quilt. This is her One Block Wonder quilt WOW! She is prolific.

Sheila V. is putting us all to shame for the Ohio Star quilt, she's made two! She has finished a quilt for her sister, Jackie and one for her daughter, Whitney who loves her cat, Simon the "Little Man" quilt.

Marie is not to be outdone as well, she's brought in a quilt that she wants to put at the top of her UFO list with a quilt that is 20 years old and all it needs is the borders to be mitered.

She's also found a woman to make quilts for her at a very reasonable price. This are two star beauties she's had made and will soon be quilted.

The icing on our cake that was our first day back in a long time off due to snow was our wonderful Mary who did a lot of house cleaning for a moving day and so we were the benefactors of this bonanza. Thanks Mary!

We are a One Block Wonder making group. It's really a fun pattern, you just don't know what you get until you start cutting and laying them out. Then the real fun begins. That is creating the design in your piece.

Pat brought hers in to the group meeting for help and advice and well you know we are quilters and they usually aren't short on those things.

Back Together Again...smile

It's been a long time since our Christmas Party. I think we had a meeting scheduled after that, but the weather was too bad for us to make it to church. Even though the snow was still on the ground and it was darn cold, we got to see each other and it was good. By the way, notice the completely clean cabinet. We've been together for 10 years now and it has never been completely emptied and cleaned. We sent a bunch of things home with member and the rest is going to Goodwill. We did keep the sewing machines of course, irons and we still have everything you need to make a quilt.

The girls have been busy with a wide variety of projects. The most popular quilt to make in our group is the One Block Wonder Encore pattern. Here Mary has made a couple more.

Christmas Party 2009

We held our annual Christmas Party at Sheelah's house in lovely Old Louisville. If you've never been before, a good time to go is during the St. James Art Show, voted as the best in the country, at one time. Also, there is an Old Louisville Home Tour, during the Christmas season.

We had a lovely time with our pot luck lunch and Show and Tell of our year's past accomplishments. Mary has been hooked by the One Block Wonder, Encore bug. I think she's made at least 6 quilts and these 2 are in the final stages of completion.

Ginny also was busy this year, finishing a Mckenna Ryan block of the month quilt, this is Journey to the Light. If any of you have ever tried one of these complicated patterns, you know what a feet that was-raw edge applique rocks!

We had our unveiling of the Christmas Socks. I'm afraid I wore the same ones last year. I'll be on the hunt for after Christmas sales for next year's socks.

Quilters have a generous spirit and our group has certainly been blessed with just such ladies in attendance. This is Betty. She introduced another Snowbird to quilting last year. This is the quilt they went to a class to learn. The woman did not like quilting. Betty took the fabric home and finished this quilt and will be returning to Florida in the winter and she's going to give it to her. Betty also finished the Quiet Village, a project a few of our members have attempted.

Sheelah always has the cutest clothes for Halloween and this year she found bat glasses and shoes with skulls.

In case you haven't guessed this is a group of ladies that like to have fun together.

Thanks to Betty for showing us how to make a Scrubby. I've never been a crochet person myself but, I think it's something I might like to learn someday. Maybe next time it won't be with netting as the material to crochet.

Mary finished hers and this is what it should look like. Sheilah's turned out to be a bit tighter than the round disc it was supposed to be. But, since it is Halloween, she thought of another option.

Part II of the Quiet Village

The ladies started the day in our usual way, chit chatting and catching up on our lives. Ruth and myself are the only ones working on the project today, which is great-private lessons!

Mary and Betty taught our group the 2nd border for the pattern in the Mccall's Quilting Magazine's Quiet Village.

Mary's border represents the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. It is made from batik's and has hand sewn stars or tiles, like a Cathedral window block.

Betty has chosen a fabric more closely shown in the magazine. She used a stripe turned different directions. Both quilts are fabulous.

They also gave us a peak into the final border that will be appliqued.

One Block Wonder Encore

We had part II of the class for the One Block Wonder Encore quilt. The ladies are finding it pretty challenging. But, the results are worth the effort.

Classes like this are wonderful examples of getting a finished quilt with lots of advice and help. We are planning on bringing the finished quilt to the Christmas party at Sheelah's house for Show and Tell.

Next Tuesday we are having another class for the Quiet Village. This pattern is from the Mccalls Quilting magazine, which requires you to purchase 3 magazines to get the full pattern.

One Block Wonder Encore Class Begins

TIME FLIES WHEN YOU ARE HAVING FUN!

Northeast Quilting Friends Quilt Guild is starting our new "season" off with a bang. We are learning the technique of making hexagons from the One Block Wonder Encore book. Most of the group chose to participate in this class. We took four hours and one quick lunch break to learn how to align the fabric, cut the triangles and sew the half hexagons. The interesting thing to me was how 2 sets of ladies chose the same fabric for the class. Oh well, with this design there is no possibility of them being similar, unless they began with the same alignment points-which they did not.

This picture is the "before". There's no stress in quilting, but, sometimes there is intense focus.

These are another set of ladies that bought the same material to work on. Amazing, or maybe not, we travel to quilt shops all the time and I guess it would be possible to pick it up on the road, especially if it was part of a great sale.

Mary has an extremely large repeat, 24 inches. It will be interesting to see how hers turns out and really they all are so interesting, it's just that no one has a repeat that large.

Kentucky State Fair Time

Here is Doris, a member of our group, that is multi talented in sewing arts. She won this blue ribbon for machine embroidery. She also entered this really nice quilt that had a poem about monkeys.

Our members took another opportunity to visit the State Fair. Only a few of our quilters went this year, but, we weren't disappointed with what we saw. I used to always put a quilt in the fair, it was just my goal to have something complete by July 1st, as that's the time they role out the mega book of entry rules and forms for our fair. I think I need to start that habit again. Yes, people touch your quilts-WHICH IS VERY ANNOYING-but, I think you have to go into it knowing that some people have no respect for the work involved and if everyone did it, the quilt would be ruined in no time. So thank you to all the quilt admirers that attend competitions that have the self discipline not to touch.

Enough of my soap box, on to the quilts.

Our quilt club offers free classes to anyone new to quilting, or are experienced pros. We have blue ribbon winners to beginners attending. Basically we have a lot of fun and fellowship, built around this hobby we love. Our schedule includes two of the quilt types we saw yesterday. This is a One Block Wonder Quilt. You use one piece of fabric to get the variety of design. The French Braid quilt is another technique we will be learning in our group. I understand it is a deceptively simple, but difficult looking to make quilt.

Our trip to a LQS called Craft Town in Salem, Indiana was canceled today as we are having flash flooding everywhere.

We are planning on doing the same trip next Tuesday, August 11th. We will meet at the church parking lot, at Northeast Christian Church, 9900 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, Ky. We will leave at 10:00 and return at 3:00.

Christmas in July What a FUN Party!

Over the years we've come up with a variety of group challenge projects. This last December Mary and Sherrill were sent on a fabric buying outing to choose five fabrics for us to use in our challenge. The party, Christmas in July, was the culmination of all our hard work. I must admit to working on it until the morning of the party!

The party was held at Shirley's house. She is our true Southern Bell Hostess and cooked and led the "entertainment" with jokes and games for us to play. THANK YOU SHIRLEY. We are truly blessed to have you in our group. Your willingness to share your quilt knowledge and home, is inspiring.

The dogs, Gus and Rosie greeted us. They seemed to know they were not long for the party and clung to Dot so they wouldn't be put out.

The day began with visiting and seeing a member we haven't seen in a long while. Evelyn came for the party and it was so nice to see her.

Shirley did a little warm up with some of her quilts she is working to complete. She is a quilter's quilter and has numerous projects and ideas swimming around her head. Quilts are everywhere and the warmth was apparent.

Lots of fun stories were told today. Everyone had a little something to say about their quilts. I can't remember them all, but, I remember laughing a lot. That is the secret of life and good quilt groups, generosity and laughter.

The ladies used this as an opportunity to have Show and Tell. Here are just a few of the quilts that weren't included in our CIJ display.

The Christmas in July showing began with our smaller quilts first. Natasha has been very busy, besides her show and tell quilt, she also made this for CIJ. Sheelah is a long time member , this is her first quilt she's done. It's really quite something for a first quilt. Ginny showed us here, she won the prize for the most creative label. Carol's quilts are always something lovely to look at. Dot and Pat got theirs finished in a very quick time. Marie, one of our newer members got into the spirit, but, didn't have time to complete the quilt, but, showed this very nice block. Sheilah V made a neat table runner. Mary's quilts are always superb. Betty and Deloris make some really pretty quilts

Quilting update and Schedule Change

First, our lazy days of summer have found our group busy on all fronts, finishing bindings and Betty and Ruth are almost finished with the Tuscany Village that we started a few months ago. The embroidery is next and what a creative experiment that will be as we all are planning different embellishments for our projects.

Schedule Change to the Calendar:

August 4th, no meeting in the room. We are going on a trip to Salem, Indiana, to one of our favorite little quilt shops, Craft Town. It's actually a pretty big quilt shop with lots of fabric fabulousness. Meet at the back of the church parking lot and we will carpool, leaving at 10:00 and returning around 2:00 or 3:00. Lunch will be at Christies, it's a nice place just around the square from Craft Town.

July 28th will have our Christmas in July party at Shirley's house. We are to be there at 10:00. People new to the group, don't need to worry about bringing their finished quilts, but, you gals that got you fabric in the fall, should come ready to unveil. It doesn't have to be quilted, a quilt top will do.

Movers and Shakers Oh My!

Movers:

One of our beloved members, Joan, has moved on to Florida. Boo! We will miss her. Joan came to us by way of another member. Now this is a word of warning to you guilds out there. It just so happened that Joan and Shirley visited another guild before they found NQF. The other unnamed quilt guild was very rude to them. Apparently there was a drawing and you put your name tags in the basket to draw a winner. Well, they pull our most wonderful girls' name tags out of the drawing in a dramatic way, stating the prizes are for members only. Shirley then grabs Joan and says, come with me, I know of another group that we need to try. And much to our gain and their loss, both the Wonder Kids, came our way.

Every quilt guild has a few members that pick up the lion's share of the work and support of members and the guild at large. Joan is/was such a member. She organized us for learning new techniques and she gave sage advice to almost everyone in the room. Whether it was in quilting or life.

But, life changes and moves on, like the stitches in a quilt.

Shakers:

We made our way to the lovely Lavenders Fabric Store. It's at 1280 S. Fork Ridge Rd, Liberty Kentucky. They are having a sale until June 13th, so you better get there quick! All the material is $2.75 a yard.

The Bread of Life was very good this time. It seem they were pulling everything fresh from their garden nearby. It was quite different than before, when the food was pretty starchy and heavy. This is a restaurant that supports the Galleian Home for children. It is at 546 Middleburg St, Liberty Ky 42539

Kings Department Store gave a very informative tour of their facility. They die cut many block designs and also are some leather goods. It is as 546 Middleburg St, Liberty, ky

This is a store that's been in business for over 50 years and is still run by the same family. Half of the store is farm supply and the other half is fabric. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive from Louisville, so we all knew where we needed to go first.

Now, really it's not about the money saving, which isn't that much when you add up the gas and time. It's about having a good time and during this economy, spreading the wealth around.

Toothbrush Rug Class and Busy Quilters

The quilters in our group have been busy. We predominantly get together to encourage each other to finish what we have started. Along those lines, this is Mary who finished a top for her nephew; Shirley finished a quilt that is a pattern from a book that her friends in South Carolina wrote; Dot is not to be outdone as she got this quilt ready for binding. My own contribution is a bible cover for my daughter's friend and our latest contribution to the group is from Pat, who has made this great recycled shirt and tie quilt.

The Aunt Philly's toothbrush rug class was a huge hit, almost all the ladies wanted to make one. This is a no sew pattern that has been around for a very long time. If you have a lot of material, as we have had donated to our group, this is a fast, easy way to use it up!

First you must tear all your strips and Carol and Ruth are helping each other with a tug of war to rip this seemingly wonderful fabric, the color was right but the sizing was too heavy. You must prewash fabric, as we found out. Sometimes donated fabrics are donated for a reason, they had a problem with it! Oh well, this is a project that has lots of forgiveness and so trial and error will lead you to the right mix of material and rhythm to weave your rug. Natasha didn't work on the rug, but generously helped out and cut or tore all the strips needed for a rug.

Tuscany Village-what fun we had...smile

Our quilt group meets every Tuesday from 10:00 to 1:00 and it would be impossible to have a learning opportunity every week. This last Tuesday, the 14th of April, we learned how to make the Tuscany Village. This is the center block for the upcoming 2 more borders to be added. The June 2009, McCalls Quilting Magazine, has the pattern. The next 2 patterns will be in August and October.

This is my take on the pattern and how I instructed the ladies that day. Of course, quilting is such a long term, solitary activity that it is up to you to make the process enjoyable and find out what fits your personality best. The instructions in the magazine suggested you cut everything out at once, I'm not big on doing everything all at once on my quilt patterns. I think in case I make a mistake, I haven't messed the whole thing up and it will still be salvageable.

First you enlarge the patter and draw it out on freezer paper and fabric. Here are the lovely ladies of the Northeast Quilting Friends doing just that. It was so nice to see them engrossed in a pattern.

Next, I suggest you fold the fabric and loosely lay it out on your pattern. This gives you an idea how the quilt will develop and helps you to direct the eye around the quilt. There will be a lot of embroidery embellishing to be added later, so you can also use that to enhance your quilt. There is even hanging laundry-to hide mistakes!

These are my preferred tools to use, a hand held iron and very sharp scissors. You need these to make the openings in the windows and doors nice and crisp. Also you will be putting the freezer paper on the right side of the fabric. This is totally opposite of some of you applique people, that would normally put the paper on the wrong side of the fabric. But, trust me, it works just fine.

Last but not least, you need to invest in a roll of parchment paper (Thanks Ruth!) or a teflon sheet that I'm using here. The tape from the freezer paper and the glue from the glue stick you use to make the openings, will stick to your iron, so you need something to keep your iron clean.

Embroidery Quilt Show and Tell

WOW! Inspiration and stimulation to spare. That's what we had when our members had the first "Airing of the Quilts". For the long life of your quilts, you should, from time to time, unfold your quilts so they don't get creases in them. Rotating your quilts from different beds-out of the sun mainly is also a good way to prolong the beauty of your quilts. What better way to do this than to bring them out and share them with an appreciative audience.

These are some of the quilts we had shown from some of the members of our guild.

Several ladies brought quilts their mother's had made. Our newest member, Doris, brought her mom's Bread of Life quilt and a wedding ring quilt her mother also made. Ruth brought her Sun Bonnet Sue that her mother had made.

Joan did a red work quilt and a leaf and acorn quilt from a cross stitch kit.

I had my Fancy Cats quilt on display. It has been in Paducah and won a blue ribbon at the Kentucky State Fair.

Carol brought in two crazy quilts, one from 1927 and another from 1895.

Sheelah had my favorite block the hexagon quilt all hand stitched from silk. This is probably another Victoria era quilt. She also brought a chubby Sue! It was made for her by her "Aunt Rosy".

Shirley has done many embroidery quilts, including this red work quilt and these baby quilts.

Betty and Dot also did lovely red work quilts and a baby quilt.

Quilts weren't the only embroidery items on display, here is a pillow case for her granddaughter, that Ginny brought.

Mary brought this quilt the other day.

Great Outing to See "Women's Work" at the Oldham County History Museum

Once again our intrepid quilters went out and about in the crisp winter air for a group outing. First stop was the Oldham County History Museum which has an exhibit called "Women's Work". This exhibit highlighted some famous women of the 20th century. The artist, Rebekkah Seigel, made quilts for Lucille Ball, Elenore Roosevelt, and a few others, using a paper doll technique. You could move the clothing around the quilt and change the clothes around. Lucille Ball's quilt had some very famous outfits, the candy factory and the Vetavitavegiman dress. They were all period clothing, very interesting quilts.

Our next stop was at a quilt shop also in Lagrange, Kentucky called the Gathering Room. Michelle Klein is the most gracious shop owner. Her beautiful shop has a lot of civil war and vintage styles of fabric...beautiful! We went as a group and got a nice discount for all.

Then we walked on to the Irish Rover on Main street in Lagrange. Most all of us got the fish and chips-yum.

After that walking back to our cars, it was a stop in at an antique shop called Three Peas in a Pod, which sadly is a casualty of the economy and will be closing soon, but, it was our great find, because there was lots of discounts and sales.

Tuesday, February 24t Field Trip!

Our group will be leaving the church at 10:00 to arrive at the Oldham County History Museum in LaGrange, Kentucky. They are having a quilt related exhibit called, Women's Work, by Rebekah Siegle. The works highlight careers of women of the 20th century, Lucille Ball, Elenaore Rosevelt, to name a couple of the pieces in the exhibit.

Then, we thought we would travel to 2 quilt shops in the area, but, alas there will be only one quilt shop to see this time. The Three Pines Designs in Buckner is not there any more, which really saddens me, because it was the closest one to my house, and the owner is a lovely, friendly woman. But, we will try out The Gathering Room, of the Quilters Calendar fame, not too long ago. Lunch will be at the Irish Rover and there are a couple of other fabric/yarn themed shops in town, plus Christmas in Kentucky.

We had a very productive day of planning. First we started with our Brainstorming Session-everyone contributed to some high level ideas-the stuff dreams are made of. Then we became practical and realized we just can't do everything, but, what we chose was a wonderful assortment of learning, show and tell/airing of the quilts, and travel.

Our quilt group meets every Tuesday at Northeast Christian Church, from 10:00 to 1:00. The Church is located at 9900 Old Brownsboro Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40241. 502-426-6668

There are no dues to attend. We have everything you need to make a quilt, including sewing machines.

Ruth will set the room up for February.

February 17th, Julie will demonstrate making a stitched spider's web for a embellishing.

February 24th, Shirley will lead us on an outing to 2 local quilt shops, lunch and a visit to the Oldham County Historical Museum where we will see a quilt exhibit called "Women's Work".

Quilter's Day Out 2008 another huge success!

All our gals had a grand time hanging the quilt challenge for Quilter's Day Out 2008. We even enlisted a remarkably handsome hubby to help the cause. This is Deloris and Bobbie. Now we had some ideas about putting the show on with some basic plans to hang our quilts, but, the Great Bobbie had way more experience with tools and was able to help make the show right and what it should be, for the Viewer's Choice Springtime in Kentucky Quilt Challenge.

This is Jennifer's Quilt. My daughter has Ewing's Sarcoma cancer and she's undergoing chemo for the next few months. Quilter's rally around a cause and I am so grateful they did this. It has truly lifted my daughter's spirit and she needs a lot of that.

We had another party!

Our group of intrepid quilters are nothing if not a bunch of party animals. Oh yes, we had another party. This was our annual end of the year get together in Old Louisville at one of our member's homes. Sheelah is a quilter that hasn't made a quilt...yet. We are working on that. You know making a quilt is a pretty big endeavor and Sheelah's life, it seems is always on the go. You quilter's out there know this is not a good way to make a quilt. Although, I do know of people that quilt in RV's and such, so it is possible, but, our friend is on the road a lot and is driving so there's no "down time" in the back of the RV to make a quilt.

Anyway, as a token of our love for her, we all made a block and the lovely Joan, sewed and quilted them all together. Great job Joan! Oh my goodness such nice people belong to our group.
Next we show off our lovely socks.

Remember: Tuesday, January 8th we meet at 10:00 at the back parking lot of the church for another Sit N Sew at Joan's house. Lunch will be at the Hawk glass blowing studio.

Northeast Quilting Friends continues on. We are completing year seven and will begin 2008 with another fun filled, educational program. We will have our planning session in January, 2008, so plan to join us if you want to be a part of the a great group of ladies that come together for fun and fellowship built around a hobby we enjoy.

Our last get together was at Mary's house. We met and mainly visited, nonstop, for 3 hours!. We had a tour of her lovely home, saw her some of her many quilts and ate some pretty good food.

Kentucky State Fair blue ribbon winner...

We all went today and spent practically the whole day walking and looking and eating. We had a great time. Several of the gals in our group has won ribbons in the past and this year is no different. Joan was the biggest winner. She hasn't entered anything in the fair in a while so, she was over due for quilts and winners. This Joan with her blue ribbons for a Dresden plate quilt and this is her seven sisters quilt. She also won an honorable mention ribbon for her jacket. Shirley also won a ribbon for her lovely applique and pieced quilt. Ruth won a ribbon for her first quilt.

This is Mary who might have inspired this quilter because, it's the same quilt pattern that Mary did and was the big winner last year.

Northeast Quilting Friends will be leaving the church parking lot at 10:00 for the Kentucky State Fair. We will be arriving at about 10:30 and will eat lunch there. Your ticket is provided. We will return about 2:00.

Wear comfortable shoes!!!

Several of our gals have entered their quilts and we want to see them, as well as the other quilts in the State Fair.

Block Exchange, Locust Grove Home

It's hard to imagine this old curmudgeon is the same man as the strapping young man accepting the surrender of the British as depicted in the painting below...

What a fun day at the historic Locust Grove Home in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. It's so wonderful living in a state with such rich history. The Locust Grove Historic home is where George Rogers Clark, one half of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition sent his remaining years of life. It's sad to think he had to move into this home, which was owned by his sister and brother in law, after he lost his leg in an accident and wasn't able to take care of himself well. This is a lovely day trip for anyone in Louisville. If you are going with a group, you can have City Cafe deliver the lunch to you, like we did, and it's an all inclusive trip. The artifacts are as close to the early period of the home. Very few are found that belong to the original family because the house was sold and only taken back by the government in the late 1960's for preservation.

Textiles were an important part of the early lives of the plantation which included many crops, not just one. Beautiful grounds surround the once many thousand acre home, which is now a 55 acre historical landmark. It is the sight of many fairs and reenactments over the seasons.

Quilter's don't forget to bring your blocks for the exchange next week. You only need fabric to be written on.

Well, once again the group has had a fantastic brain storming/planning session. This "semester" I think we have a variety everyone should enjoy. When we are not traveling or learning something new, we are having our usual Sit-N-Sew at Northeast Christian Church, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA every Tuesday.

That being said, our plans are thus:

July 24th: Shirley will be finishing up the Underground Sampler blocks.

July 31st: We will be touring the Locust Grove Home. This is an antebellum home with some civil war era quilts. We will have a guided tour and lunch at the home.

August 7th: It's time already for the signature block exchange to begin. Our Bloomin' Rose block exchange was such a huge success, that once again, Shirley will lead us in our gift to each other for the Christmas party in December. Look through your stash of fabric and bring your biggest piece of material to work from, or be creative and bring what you want for your color coordinated blocks this time.

August 21st: Julie organizes a trip to the Kentucky State Fair.

September 11th: Joan teaches a mystery class.

October 16th: Sheelah organizes a trip to Louisville Stoneware and Hadley Pottery.

November 16th: Shirley teaches a string quilt class.

November 20th: Julie organizes a trip to the Farmington Historic Home.

December 1st: Party at Sheelah's house.

Learning opportunities at our local quilt shops pop up from time to time and sometimes we take a class together. Also, we have pot luck lunches at our member's homes. So, by no means is this the final say in our fun times together. There's never too much laughter or too many opportunities to expand our ability to learn something new, about quilting or life.

Bloomin' Rose Block Party

One thing almost all quilt groups are good at is having a party. Heaven forbid there not be cake, or puppies or husbands hanging around. Of course we played games. Sherrill and Evelyn are having a discussion concerning their winnings. We used just such an occasion to have our chance to show off all the quilts we'd made. Last December, instead of a gift exchange at our Christmas party, we had a signature block exchange for the members that wanted to participate. We exchanged 16 blocks with each other, and added a lot more or a few more to come up with these lovely quilts.

Shirley hosted us at her home and made a rag quilt version of the blocks, quilting as you go and leaving the frayed edges, thus the rag quilt look.

Sherrill made extra blocks and made butterflies and add a striking blue sashing which fit just right.

Evelyn is our Queen of the guild. She isthe longest attending member of the quilt guild. She showed her stuff with making, I think one of the largest quilts. What is most impressive is she does most, if not all her work, by hand!

Lovely Mary makes the most lovely quilts. If we were to award a prize, we all agreed, she would win.

Ginny got the prize for using up the stash in the best way. This border fabric is from a retreat trip we took several years back.

Our group is blessed with some particularly great quilters. Joan is one of those. She is, what I call a master quilter. In her other life, she taught home economics, has been published in magazines and sews anything and everything quilt or not related. She was also the first to complete her quilt for the Show and Tell.

CiCi is a newer member that has created this lovely quilt with the leaves as a secondary design-very nice movement in this quilt.

Carol is another new quilter that continues to amaze us. I can't wait to see her interpretation of a quilt she's working on.
Yours truly. I was the only one that pieced the border. I like the way the hourglass blocks mimicked the center blocks. The corner blocks were free motion quilted roses.Deloris made a lovely quilt, choosing just the right colors in the borders.

Dot did the most innovative piecing technique for the group project. She butted the blocks together and fused the striped sashing over the top. Then she zigzagged over the top of the fused sashing. Click to enlarge to see the borders better, sorry about the blurry picture.
Ruth lightened up the design with a delicate looking quilt that is very nice.

We had to add some extra signatures but, that was half the fun, finding your name in another person's quilt. Some of us added our name more than once...oh well...smile.

A good day was had by all and we went on our way looking forward to planning another year together, parties, Sit-N-Sew and travels.
